Primary Concerns with Ceramics:

  • Silica Dust
  • Lead

The primary inhalation concern when handling clay is silica dust. Silica is found in many types of clay. This can cause “potter’s rot”, a disease more formally known as silicosis, which has many respiratory symptoms including emphysema and increased susceptibility to respiratory disease.

Silicosis is a chronic disease and may take years of exposure to silica dust to develop. Certain types of talc used in pottery may contain asbestos fibers which are carcinogenic and may lead to respiratory disease.

Many glazes contain lead and can be a health risk to those working with the products. The use of lead-free or leadless products is the best way to prevent lead poisoning. Be aware that the label “lead-safe” means that the final product, if fired properly, is safe for storing food and drinks, but that the glaze can still be dangerous to those working with it.
