Primary Concern with Sculpture:

  • Plaster, rock, or wood dust particles

It is difficult to individually categorize all the inhalation dangers of sculpture because there is no limit to the different types of materials that can be used in this art form. The biggest concern for sculptors is dust from their various materials, however, different materials produce dust that is varying in levels of toxicity. Some of the more common concerns are discussed.


In sculpting, especially if grinding or sanding is being done, dust will form. Plaster dust is extremely dangerous and may cause respiratory irritation or other symptoms, depending on the quantity inhaled. Some soft stones like granite, sandstone and soapstone contain silica and are highly toxic when inhaled. Serpentine, soapstone and greenstone may contain asbestos.

If you are working with wood, hardwood dust poses a several risks. Some woods may cause allergic reactions, and there has also been a link between hardwood dust and an increase in a type of nasal and sinus cancer. By choosing common hardwoods, most of these risks can be avoided.
